Summary:
JOB SUMMARY: Codes and sequences diagnoses and procedures using ICD-9-CM and CPT as appropriate. Utilizes computer programs designed to assist in the process and to transmit data. Follows up on records which are incomplete for billing and assists with procedures necessary for their completion. Performs other HIM Department duties as assigned. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: High school graduate and one or more of the following credentials: Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Associate (CCA). Five or more years of coding experience, in an acute care hospital setting, may be substituted for the RHIA, RHIT, or CCS credentials. Three or more years of coding experience, focused on hospital emergency department services, and/or hospital sponsored ambulatory care facilities, may be substituted for the CPC or CCA credential. Current knowledge of coding regulations. "SKILLS/ABILITIES: ICD-9-CM coding experience. CPT experience is a plus. Hospital based experience is preferred. Knowledge of DRGs and APCs. Must take coding test at interview to demonstrate ability. " Must hold one of the following certifications: Certified Professional Coder Certified Coding Specialist Certified Coding Associate
